[Software Description] This software will update the TS5010 and TS3010 series TeraStations’ firmware to version 4.40. If your unit’s firmware is already version 4.40 or later, you don’t need this update. [How to Verify the Firmware Version] Select your TeraStation from NAS Navigator2. The firmware version is displayed on the bottom right corner of the window. [Updating Firmware] • Do not turn off the TeraStation until the firmware update is completed and the “finished” message is displayed. • Disconnect iSCSI volumes using the iSCSI initiator before updating the firmware. • If you are using firmware version 4.00 and the size of log files that was created after updating the firmware version 4.00 until now, these log files may be deleted when updating the firmware. Make sure you have backed up the necessary log files to different folder, not on the TeraStation before updating the firmware. • If your TeraStation meets the following conditions, the TeraStation may not boot after restarting or updating the firmware: (1) The I70 and I71 information messages appear frequently, (2) The firmware is version 4.00. Although data on the TeraStation will be kept if the issue has already occurred on your TeraStation, there is no way to recover from the issue by yourself. Contact Buffalo technical support for assistance. If the issue hasn’t occurred yet, you may prevent the issue by changing the TeraStation’s log settings. Refer to the procedures below to change file access log settings. Step 1: Delete all existing file access logs. If the log files are necessary, copy them to another location. 1. From Settings, navigate to “Management” > “Logs”. 2. Click ‘Delete’ to the right of “File Access Logs”. 3. Click ‘Yes’. Note: If you want to copy log files to another location, follow the procedure below: 1. From Settings, navigate to “Management” > “Logs”. 2. Click ‘Edit’. 3. Enable “Share Link to Logs” and select the shared folder where the link will be created. 4. Access the shared folder that you have configured at step 3 and copy the “file.log” file to the desired location. Step 2: Change the settings to save fewer file access logs. 1. From Settings, navigate to “Management” > “Logs”. 2. Click ‘Edit’. 3. Change archive rule settings to the following Buffalo-recommended values: Units: “Size” File Sizes: “100 MB” Versions: “13” [Notes] • Make sure the TeraStation’s MTU size is set to a value smaller than that of the hub or router. Larger frame sizes may not allow data to transfer to the TeraStation properly. • This firmware will send your usage information to Buffalo automatically. The usage information may include your TeraStation series name, firmware version, some settings such as the number of shared folders, some drive information such as S.M.A.R.T., and usage environment such as the number of client PCs. None of the collected information contains your personal data such as usernames and passwords. Buffalo will only use the collected information to improve future firmware updates and no other purposes. To disable this function, open Settings after updating the firmware to this version, then navigate to “Management” > “Update” > “Edit” and disable “Update Notification”. For more detailed information, refer to the user manual of your TeraStation model. • Since firmware version 4.36, saved settings cannot be applied from a USB drive that contains saved settings from a unit that was running firmware version 4.32 or earlier. In such a case, create the settings restoration USB drive again using a unit running firmware version 4.36 or later. • Do not update the firmware from version 3.11 or earlier to 3.12 or later if the TeraStation is a TS51210RH series model and two UPS devices are connected to it. If the unit has been updated already, reconfigure the UPS settings. • If you are using firmware version 3.04 or earlier and the backup source or destination folder name contains “%”, that backup job should be reconfigured after updating the firmware to version 3.12 or later. • If you are using firmware version 4.00 and configure the SMB protocol version to 2.2.2 or higher, the TeraStation may not be accessible from the client devices. In such a case, change the version to 2.1 or lower. • If settings are initialized with an iSCSI volume has been created using an LVM-enabled drive or array, that iSCSI volume mode may be displayed as “NAS”, instead of “iSCSI” on the NAS volume list. Even if in such a case, the iSCSI volume is accessible via iSCSI initiator. [For Customers Using Replication] To securely copy your data via replication, a backup device access key must be configured for the replication target. Please make sure you have installed the latest firmware downloaded from the Buffalo website on your TeraStation and verify that a backup device access key has been configured on the replication target folder for any configured replication jobs. Refer to the “Replication” section in the user manual of your TeraStation model for the procedure to configure a backup device access key to the replication target folder. If you are replicating devices over different subnets or through NAT abstraction, using a VPN is recommended for network security. [About Firmware Version] If you update the firmware from your TeraStation’s Settings, you may see a different firmware version than the one uploaded on the Buffalo website. The firmware version uploaded on the Buffalo website is the latest version. [Issues Occurring After the Firmware Update] • If the I61 message appears on the LCD panel and/or NAS Navigator2, open Settings, select the option to “Recover firmware” under “Action”, and click ‘OK’. • If the “The parameters for the specified method are invalid.” error message appears while changing settings on Settings, clear the browser cache and try again. [How to Update the Firmware] 1. Connect the TeraStation and a computer to run the updater on the same network subnet. The subnet masks should be the same and the first three numbers of the IP addresses should be the same. The last number of the IP addresses should be different. For example, if the IP address and subnet mask of the computer are “192.168.0.10/255.255.255.0” and the IP address and subnet mask of the TeraStation are “192.168.1.150/255.255.255.0”, then the updater will not work properly. In such a case, reconfigure the TeraStation’s IP address and subnet mask to “192.168.0.150/255.255.255.0”. Then, they will be on the same subnet and the updater will work properly. 2. Exit all applications. Also, stop or exit any firewall software. 3. Extract the downloaded file and run “TSUpdater.exe”. When a TeraStation is detected, an update window will open. 4. If multiple TeraStations are connected to the network, select which TeraStation to update. 5. Click ‘Update’ and enter the TeraStation’s admin password. 6. Click ‘OK’. 7. It will take several minutes for the firmware to update. During the update process, the info LED will blink. Don’t disconnect or power down the TeraStation until the update is finished. 8. When the update is finished, a message will be displayed.
